Thermal emission of neutron stars with internal heaters

چکیده
Using 1D and 2D cooling codes, we study thermal emission from neutron stars with steady state internal heaters of various intensities and geometries (blobs or spherical layers) located at different depths in the crust. The generated heat tends to propagate radially, from the heater down to the stellar core and up to the surface; it is also emitted by neutrinos. In local regions near the heater, the results are well described with the 1D code. The heater’s region projects on to the stellar surface forming a hotspot. There are two heat propagation regimes. In the first, conduction outflow regime (realized at heat rates H

The physics of neutron stars.
Neutron stars are some of the densest manifestations of massive objects in the universe. They are ideal astrophysical laboratories for testing theories of dense matter physics and provide connections among nuclear physics, particle physics, and astrophysics. Neutron stars may exhibit conditions and phenomena not observed elsewhere, such as hyperon-dominated matter, deconfined quark matter, supe...
متن کاملCooling of isolated neutron stars as a probe of superdense matter physics
We review a current state of cooling theory of isolated neutron stars. The main regulators of neutron star cooling are discussed. We outline the sensitivity of cooling models to equation of state of matter in the neutron star core; the presence or absence of enhanced neutrino emission; superfluidity of baryonic component of matter. A comparison of the cooling theory with observations of thermal...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent pulsations of superfluid neutron stars
We examine radial oscillations of superfluid neutron stars at finite internal temperatures. For this purpose, we generalize the description of relativistic superfluid hydrodynamics to the case of superfluid mixtures. We show that in a neutron star, at hydrostatic and beta-equilibrium, the redshifted temperature gradient is smoothed out by neutron superfluidity (but not by proton superfluidity)....
متن کاملLow Energy X-ray Emission from Young Isolated Neutron Stars
A young neutron star with large spin-down power is expected to be closely surrounded by an e pair plasma maintained by the conversion of γ-rays associated with the star’s polar-cap and/or outer-gap accelerators. Cyclotron-resonance scattering by the e and e within several radii of such neutron stars prevents direct observations of thermal X-rays from the stellar surface. Estimates are presented...
متن کاملThe Thermal Evolution of Ultramagnetized Neutron Stars
Using recently calculated analytic and numerical models for the thermal structure of ultramagnetized neutron stars, we estimate the effects that ultrastrong magnetic fields B ≥ 10 G have on the thermal evolution of a neutron star. Understanding this evolution is necessary to interpret models that invoke “magnetars” to account for soft γ-ray emission from some repeating sources. Subject headings...
